As I watch the attack adds from various candidates and read of others it is easy to say, "I will be glad when this election is over." I have had many people tell me they hate the elections and will be glad when it is over. No wonder there is so much apathy on the part of the electorate in America.
Those running for office and those voting have all become callous to the real significance of our right to vote. Very few people are excited about election day and casting their ballot. The problem is we should be.
When our Founding Fathers put our Constitution in place to guide our future they understood our right to vote as a God given one. A right to be cherished and celebrated, not dreaded or wasted. I believe they would have told you to not vote was unpatriotic and lazy.
They believed July 4th should be celebrated in honor of the Declaration. I believe they also expected us to cherish our right to vote for our representatives in government and to use that right wisely.
Election day should be a day of celebration of not only our right to vote but of those who have defended that right with their blood and service. Americans have long been willing to defend our Constitution and our right to vote provided in it.
We need to rise above the partisan politics and negative ads and look at what is really going on here. It is about exercising a right that few people in this world ever will. The right to stand as "we the people" and elect our government without threat of reprisal. It is about having a voice in the way we are governed.
Lets do it right this November 2nd. Go and cast your ballot excitedly and cherish the moment. Afterwards, celebrate that God given right for the rest of the day. As a veteran I intend to celebrate the fact that I am a Defender of Liberty as well.
